Chapter Ten

USUALLY DURING PRACTICE, MY mind wanders away. Sometimes I’m thinking about what homework I have for the night, other times I’m humming along to a song that’s stuck in my head, but most of the time I’m dreaming of a huge Thanksgiving dinner because I’m starving. Today, however, I’m recounting all the ways that the day sucked, starting with this morning.

If I had any doubts that MJ saw Madisen’s video, I didn’t after first period. We are in the same history class, and MJ made a point of loudly whispering to anyone who would listen that I’d slept with Noah. For proof, she pointed them in the direction of Madisen’s Instagram. I bolted out of class as soon as the bell rang as a small group was encircling my desk and throwing questions my way.

Lunch was equally great. After what happened at the swim meet, I wasn’t sure if Hannah would even say hi to me, but she did, and she showed me a picture of the dress she’d picked out with the approval of Dina. In the picture, Hannah was wearing a floor-length, blush, A-line gown, and Madisen was standing beside her with her hands clamped onto Hannah’s biceps. They were both beaming. It wasn’t Hannah’s intention, but seeing the picture made my stomach hurt, and I threw out the rest of my lunch. Which meant by the time I made it to calculus, my stomach was a rumbling machine.

Things weren’t any better there. Madisen and I sit at the same cluster of desks, and it was deathly quiet between us—quiet enough to make our cluster-mates wonder what was up. That is, until MJ happened to share Madisen’s Instagram post in our calculus group chat. While we were supposed to be working on a packet of problems, practically the whole class was watching Madisen’s video. Suddenly I was public enemy number one to everyone except the three super smart kids at the front of the room.

If we had calculus before lunch, I would have texted back in the group chat that Madisen faked the video. But I was picturing Hannah wearing her bridesmaid dress with Madisen squeezing her tight, and it was hard to feel like Hannah wasn’t already choosing Madisen over me. If I told everyone, it would certainly start something with Madisen again, and this time I might lose Hannah for good. Plus, would they really believe me? Isn’t that what anyone would say to try and save face? It was better to not give the video any attention and hope that spoke volumes about its validity.

No one replied in the group chat, and no one said anything to me after class, but I could feel everyone’s eyes on me when I stood up from my chair. It was enough to drive me to the decision that my friendship with Madisen was over. Even if she apologized, I wouldn’t ever be her friend again. A friend doesn’t do this, and a friend definitely doesn’t sit back quietly and watch their friend burn.
